Baghdad's First Skatepark - Make Life Skate Life
At SkatePro, we’re honored to have supported the establishment of the first skatepark in Baghdad, Iraq, together with our amazing customers. After years of determination and hard work, Baghdad Skatepark has finally been realized, and there’s good reason to celebrate.
Spearheaded by Make Life Skate Life, and supported by a network of global and local partners, the completion of this project is a substantial step forward for the youth of Baghdad.
The design of Baghdad Skatepark is the result of a fruitful collaboration between local skaters and designers from the renowned design company East by West. Conceptually distinctive – featuring ramps designed to resemble Iranian carpets – the skatepark truly stands out, and there is something for every level of skill. Local skaters and volunteers have put many hours of hard labor into shaping the concrete and getting this project from the realm of ideas into actual being.
February 1st, 2025 marked the official opening of this long-anticipated skatepark, and thus a new era for the skateboarding community of Baghdad has begun.
Togetherness Shaped in Concrete
“Skateboarding is not just a sport; it builds community. Finding a place in Baghdad to build a free and public skatepark was incredibly challenging. It took more than 5 years of persistence, but finally the dream of hundreds of skaters living in Baghdad will come true. We are proud to see this dream come to life. The skateboarding community in Iraq will grow even more from here.” Mohammed of Suli Skatepark, the first ever skatepark in Iraq.
For a city like Baghdad, where public spaces for youth and women in skateboarding are limited, the new skatepark offers something rare – a free, accessible venue that encourages growth, unity, and community spirit. As with other skateparks supported by Make Life Skate Life, special care has been taken to make it a welcoming space for beginners, with opportunities to join skate classes and rent skateboards. Beyond the joy of skating itself, the park holds the potential to inspire creativity, self-expression, and improved mental health – all ripple effects of being active and spending time outdoors.
At SkatePro, we’re truly impressed by the resilience of the skateboarding community in Baghdad and the tireless dedication of our partners. Over five years in the making, Baghdad Skatepark is the product of a collaborative effort involving diverse contributors, including the Baghdad Skatepark Project, Un Ponte Per, Iraq’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, Suli Skatepark, and many others. Funding was made possible through the German and French Embassies, the ISLAH Reparations Project, and individual donors, with SkatePro contributing through our annual Giveback Friday initiative.
